Porcelain Veneers are very thin pieces of tooth shaped porcelain that are custom made by a professional dental laboratory. They are more durable and have improved esthetics over cosmetic bonding, but in most cases require a greater financial investment than cosmetic bonding. They are bonded onto the front of the teeth to create a beautiful and a natural looking smile. Porcelain Veneers can completely change your teeth and smile. They are more conservative than porcelain crowns and are an excellent solution in treating many cosmetic dental conditions.
Having veneers made usually requires two appointments to complete the process. This may require little or no anesthesia during the procedure. In certain cases, there is no need to prepare the teeth before veneer placement. However, in most cases, the teeth will need to be prepared by shaping the enamel of the tooth to allow for the thickness of the veneer. A mold of the teeth is made and the desired color will then be chosen. If very little tooth structure is removed, there is no need for a temporary veneer. Otherwise, a temporary may be placed. On the second visit, the teeth will be cleaned and treated with special liquids to allow a durable bond. Bonding cement is then placed on the veneer to adhere it to the tooth.
